Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t possibly have anymore surprises, it goes and throws an asteroid into the mix.
The celestial object named 2018VPA is due to come closest to our planet on 2nd November, just a day before the US elections. It was first discovered by researchers at Palomar Observatory in California in 2018 – But will it have an impact on the big vote?
Unlikely, says NASA:
“Asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, approximately 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth. If it were to enter our planet’s atmosphere, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size,” A statement reads.
“NASA has been directed by Congress to discover 90% of the near-Earth asteroids larger than 140 meters (459 feet) in size and reports on asteroids of any size.”
The chances of us being hit are just 0.41% – Is that all you’ve got 2020. Recently, another asteroid peaked the interest of humanity for very different reasons.
Psyche 16, has long been on NASA’s radar, not because of an imminent threat, but because of it’s value in precious metals. The gold rich chunk of rock is thought to be worth $10,000 Quadrillion. Catch up with this story in our previous article.
