Staffordshire and West Mercia police have released UFO reports dating back to 2017 in response to a freedom of information request. It’s also thought other police forces have been approached similar requests in the UK, with West Midlands Police confirming they are set to release logs.
The logs describe many intriguing calls across the Midlands with one member of the public stating, “I think I have seen a UFO. There was a line across the sky the size of six football pitches and then it faded away.” On this occasion no investigation was carried out, but another log from Worcester does confirm that police were dispatched to a report on 11th April 2020.
The UK UFO desk, run by the ministry of defence, was shutdown in 2009 leaving no official body to investigate sightings. A recent survey carried out online concluded that less than 1% of witnesses reported their UFO sighting to the police. The fear of being ridiculed or accused of wasting police time were the main reasons that witnesses kept quiet.
This raises the question: Are UFO sightings a police matter and should such reports be treated more seriously?
